A BD-50 is the popular name for a dual layer Blu-ray disc. It can hold approximately 50GB of data. In comparison, a dual layer DVD can hold up to 8.5GB of data and a dual layer HD DVD can hold up to 30GB of data.
Compare to BD-50, BD-25 is a single layer Blu-Ray disc, which can only hold 25 GB of data. And 4.5 hours of HD video and over 12 hours of SD video can fit on a single layer BD-25. The single layer of a common dvd only hold 4.5 GB of data in total.
